The Pearl Lugger – Sail the Willie in Broome

Sail back in time on the Willie an old pearl lugger in Broome, Western Australia. The Willie has been brought back to Broome after spending recent years in Malaysia. Today the remarkable old lugger has been refurbished and offers cruise tours out of Broome.

The Pearl Lugger Tour

The Willie is a reproduction of a traditional pearl lugger, built in Fremantle in 1980, the 67-foot gaff-rigged schooner has two Tasmanian Huon Pine trees for her masts.

In 2011 The Willie was fishing for Mother of Pearl in the North West, doing what she was initially intended, just like pearl luggers that were sailing the shores of Broome in the early 1900s. During this time she became the last working pearl lugger in Western Australia.

The Willie has had an eventful history, she has worked as a pearl lugger, fishing boat, private charter vessel, surf charter vessel in Indonesia and completed scientific explorations discovering ship wreaks and working National Geographic.
